His career, highlighted by the 2012 Gerald Wilson Award for composition, blossomed further after moving to New York in 2016, where he collaborated with global artists and released his acclaimed album, Still Time To Quit, in 2020, securing the #3 spot in the Seattle Times' "Best Local Jazz Albums of 2020." Renowned for his work with vocalists and contributions to world music, McCarthy's influence extends to performances with Carnatic and Gnawa musicians, as well as features on albums by rising stars and appearances on BBC Radio 1 and Questlove’s social media.
